Description
Kalahari red goat is a hardy, very adaptable meat goat that could survive the harsh conditions of the African landscape while still maintaining a high birth rate, high survival rate, and a profitable meat carcass. Emphasis was also put on mothering traits and adaptability. The so-called Kalahari Reds were born, named after the colour of the sand in the Kalahari Desert.
Kalahari Reds are a distinct and separate breed of Goat. They are not related to the Boer Goat and have additional advantages to the original boer goat breed: enhanced meat tenderness, the hardiness of the animal, and the camouflage which improves the survival of their kids.
K
The most distinct visual characteristic of Kalahari Red goats is their red coat color. White or light shades of red are not desirable, as they do not provide as much camouflage from predators in their native pastures. They also have strong herding instincts for protection. Kalahari Reds have long, floppy ears.
Generally, newborns are strong and have a strong urge to suck. They herd well, and animals flock together. They breed all year round and will kid three times in two years. In 2000, we decided that the future of the Kalahari Reds and the Ennobled Boer Goat lies overseas.
They grow relatively fast and are also very suitable for a commercial goat meat farming business. They have excellent mothering instincts, and they raise their kids with very little assistance from farm employees. Their excellent mobility allows them to walk long distances in search of food and water. Ahmed Livestock Farm in South Africa
